Super Review

Directed by James Gunn
Written By James Gunn
Starring Rain Wilson, Ellen Paige, Liv Tyler, Kevin Bacon, and Nathan Fillion

Ever since I first heard of the film I was excited. Rain Wilson is a funny guy who really has not been in much films even thought he is the best character on the Office. I also love James Gunn whose first film Slither was a great horror film that dose not base off jump scares. Then there is Juno star Ellen Paige who is one of the best young actresses in Hollywood. Then the trailer came out and I was even more excited. I have now seen the movie and it is now time for my review of the film.
Super is about Frank D'Arbo (Rain Wilson) an awkward man whose wife Sarah (Liv Tyler) is a recovering drug addict. Just when life seems to be getting better in comes Jacques (Kevin Bacon) a drug dealer who wins over Sarah. Frank is sadden and tries to find some way to get revenge. He then sees a show on television, a show about a super hero the Holy Avenger (Nathan Fillion). Then Frank decides what he is going to do, become a super hero called, The Crimson Bolt.
After some brutal "heroic acts", Frank meets Libby (Ellen Paige) a comic book nerd who grows fondly to him. She soon finds out that Frank is the Crimson Bolt and wants to be his sidekick. Libby becomes, Boltie. So will Frank be able to save his wife from Jacques or will he find the brutal truth about being a super hero.
Super is a film that is not for everyone. It is extremely dark and most critics have been disturbed by the film (46 percent of the Rotten Tomato meter) or awkward. I honestly think those critics are dead wrong and dont get the film. This is a character piece about a psychopath but at the same time, the film was heart warming with moments that had me in tears. He is not a likable character to start but by the end, I think he relies his purpose in life.
The performances in the film are universally spectacular. Wilson shows a side of him we have never seen before, dark but he showed quite a bit of emotion. Ellen Paige has her best performance as a deranged young adult who just wants to fight crime. She steals everyone scene she is in. Along with them are Liv Tyler who does a nice job as the recovering addict and Kevin Bacon does a nice job as well. As I mentioned Nathan Fillion had a nice cameo has a Christian super hero, the Holy Avenger.
The film was sublimely directed by James Gunn who is one of the most creative and unappreciated directors in Hollywood. This may only be his second film, but he showed experience beyond his years in this film. He actual reminds me of Edgar Wright a bit with each having such creative writing and directing styles. This film only cost 2 million dollars to make but the action in the film looked great.
Overall Super is one of the best movies of the year and a instant cult classic. It is the most real a super hero movie can get and I liked that alot. This movie is in very few theaters but you can also check it out on Demand. If you did not know I give the film a rating of.

3 out 5
